It’s hard to believe that it was less than a month ago when we learned that the Coronavirus was on its way to the United States. According to the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases. The New York Times reported that Director Nancy Messonnier warned, “It’s not so much of a question of if this will happen anymore but rather more of a question of exactly when this will happen.” The rapid changes that have happened since then have sent the American people into a tail spin.

Though the Coronavirus outbreak started in China, and is believed to have originally been transmitted from human contact with bats who harbored the virus, at this point it is mostly being spread by person to person contact.

Does the thought of the Coronavirus spreading through our schools and businesses across the United States and throughout the world, while financial markets plummet, send a chill through your body?  No doubt, it does.

It’s a frightening thought.

When fear seeps in, you may feel helpless, worried about one more calamity that’s pummeling towards you, your friends, neighbors, community, country and planet.

What do we need to know about the virus?

It may be a little comforting to know that according to a World Health Organization official report, most of the people in China who were infected by the Coronavirus – in fact over 80% — experienced only mild illness. 15% of the people developed a serious condition such as respiratory failure and pneumonia and just 3% became critically ill.

What are the symptoms of the Coronavirus?

Published studies on the Coronavirus are reporting that the symptoms of those infected with the virus include fever, dry cough, shortness of breath, sore throat, fatigue, headache, diarrhea and pneumonia. Respiratory illnesses that range from the common cold to more severe conditions such as SARS—Severe Acute Respiratory Symptom can be caused by the Coronavirus.

What can we do to stay safe?

At this time, the only recommendation the Center for Disease Control or CDC is giving the American people is to wash your hands frequently and when you are ill, don’t go out in public. According to Jama, at this time, there is no vaccine or treatment for Coronavirus.

Who is most at risk?

Researchers are saying that the most at risk population is patients between the ages of 49-56. Lancet reported that more men than women were susceptible, with children being least at risk. 32% of the people who contracted the Coronavirus had underlying health issues, the most prevalent being type-2 diabetes, and heart disease.

The bottom line here seems to be: The Coronavirus is on its way to the United States and spreading from country to country. There is nothing we can do in the arena of disease prevention to avoid it, at this time.

So what do we do when there is nothing we can do?

From a spiritual perspective, perhaps there is an opportunity here.

Ask yourself this: Can getting to a point in your life where you run head-on into the fact that all your actions in the material, physical world, are futile, actually be a blessing?

I would have to say, yes.

The Chinese say, “From crisis, opportunity is born.”

Since there is no cure for the Coronavirus, it seems that the only course of action you and I can take is to increase our own level of mental, physical and emotional health, so we are prepared to handle whatever challenges we are faced with.

In a nutshell, this means increasing our inner and outer strength.

Here are 4 ways to strengthen your mind-body-spirit:

  • Increasing Inner Power

The only way to harness the deeper power and strength inside you, is to actually dive deep within your own heart and soul and cultivate a relationship, with your own brilliant subconscious mind and soul.

I have been teaching self-hypnosis as a powerful form of meditation for thirty years now. I am still in awe of the changes people experience, from weight loss, to quitting smoking, to reversing diabetes, to transforming their relationships.

The point of hypnosis is to empower yourself to leave behind the wounds of the past that have kept you feeling small, and instead to embrace your greatest resources—strength, compassion, and immense creativity, to create a new life that brings you happiness and peace.

We know that stress exacerbates every illness and disease, and is often implicated as a causal effect, as well. As a biofeedback therapist, I have seen with my own eyes how practicing self-hypnosis properly can actually lower blood pressure, slow down and relax brain waves, reduce muscle tension, and eliminate pain.

Right now, with so much chaos in the world, especially the imminent threat of Coronavirus approaching and spreading, practicing self-hypnosis as a form of meditation, relaxation and self-empowerment, is absolutely essential.

  • Eat Healthy

Though diabetes is clearly not a cause for Coronavirus, or even necessarily a mitigating factor, the fact is that it’s being mentioned as a corollary to many of the confirmed cases. The reality is that low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) or type 2 diabetes, which is high blood sugar, threatens the quality of your life regardless.

The great news is that we can absolutely manage or prevent type 2 diabetes by changing the way we eat.  Recently I did the 23 and Me genetic testing. It was so confirming for me to see in black and white that I am 98% likely to be diabetic. The point is I am not diabetic. My blood sugar is normal. Why? Because I have not eaten sugar and simple carbs for decades.

This is why I am passionate about teaching people to do the same. The only way to lose weight permanently to prevent disease like heart attack, diabetes, cancer and stroke, is to change the way you think about food subconsciously. If you don’t take that step, you will always feel deprived.

Diets don’t work because they lead to feelings of deprivation. But you can absolutely change your thinking to prefer whole, real, clean, unprocessed food from the earth. Eating greens, vegetables, protein, healthy fats and unprocessed complex carbohydrates in a balanced way can absolutely become the new normal for you. I’ve seen it with myself, with the thousands of people I have personally worked with and I’m holding that possibility for you, too!

  • Connect to Spirit

There is no doubt that being happy boosts the immune system. How can you increase your will to live fully and healthfully?  By tapping into the preciousness of your life. This morning I was walking the Siesta Key Beach before dawn, which is a time when I like to go into deep prayer as I commune with nature.

I had a thought, “What do I want? What should I pray for?” when all of a sudden, from way beyond my physical self, a vast lightness and beauty entered me, and very lovingly and gently reminded me, “You have everything you need. Your life is so blessed.” With the Gulf of Mexico water lapping at my feet as I walked across the sand, I felt as though a supreme light had entered my being.

“Yes,” I realized. “I don’t need anything more. My life is so incredibly blessed.”  I felt my whole being uttering the words, “I am so grateful. Thank you. Thank you, God.”

What a beautiful feeling it is to be content. To remember all the friendship in your life—all the love and kindness that is already there. If you are not experiencing that right now, imagine what it would be like if you were. Your subconscious mind does not know the difference between what’s real and what’s imagined.

Imagine yourself happy. See yourself giving and receiving love.

Feel in your body, with all your senses, what it would be like to be fulfilled—doing meaningful work in the world. Picture the blessing of your contribution and receiving an abundance of love, sustenance and gratitude for yourself.  If finances are an issue, imagine that you are prosperous and all your needs are being met.

In the face of actual pain and difficulty, it may seem very trivial to suggest “imagining” away the suffering. I understand and I am not suggesting burying your head in the sand. I know how deeply it hurts to be going through difficult times and endure physical and emotional pain. It’s heart wrenching.

But the issue is that the only way I know to get through pain as quickly as possible is to feel it, accept that it’s there, and use the tools we have been given to lift up our consciousness.  In those difficult times, more than ever, we need to cultivate a deeper connection to the healing energy within and around us.

The physical world is dense and it’s tough.  But we have a connection to a vast, beautiful, loving and healing Spirit, within. It connects us with all of life. When we are able to surrender to life’s challenges, and drop from the mind to the heart, by literally placing a hand on the chest/heart center and bowing the head/mind to the heart, we can connect to an infinite strength and wisdom from beyond.

Miraculously, this Force for Good, actually answers our prayers—our sincere call for help—and guides us to the people, places and opportunities that offer solutions and healing.

But this lifeline also clearly wants you and me to take responsibility. In other words, we still have to embrace the thoughts, words and actions that will steer our body-mind back to health.

But what a blessing it is to know that we are not alone. We are going through this together and we have spiritual support.

  • Create a Healthy Lifestyle

What does it mean to take the right actions? To have the right thoughts and words?  It means to set a positive intention to fill yourself with and radiate positive energy and compassion.  It also means to take care of yourself by moving your body every day, even if you don’t want to.

Our life is made up of habits. Even if you can’t “exercise” like you used to, make sure to move your body daily.  Movement strengthens the heart, lungs and bones. It controls weight and reduces blood sugar levels, while regulating blood pressure and preventing cancer. Not moving your body daily needs to become, not an option.

Part of creating a healthy lifestyle means ingesting only that which uplifts your energy. Avoiding toxins, chemicals and excess alcohol and drugs.

Though I’m not a huge supplement person, there are certain key nutrients that can be helpful to build your immune system. Vitamin D, Vitamin C and L-Glutamine are known to be powerful immune supporters.

You probably also know that I am a huge advocate of certain herbs, including medical grade CBD, to help keep the body balanced, calm and healthy. So much so, that I created my own brand of the highest quality CBD and herbal products on the market.

Now is the time to build up your immune system and your resilience.  CBD alone is not a miracle cure, but it can be very helpful, when combined with a nutritious, healthy eating plan, to boost the immune system.

This is a time to come together and support one another, as humanity often does during a time of crisis. And remembering that wise Chinese proverb, we must seek the opportunity available to us through the challenges that lie ahead.

Remember where your true strength lies: within your own deep heart.  Allow yourself to bask in that strength and radiate your beautiful healing light.  Coronavirus will come and go. It seems that humanity always faces opportunities for growth and learning.

We don’t know how much time we have here, but this is a great time to remember one thing: Your life is precious. Your health is precious. Your body is precious. Honor yourself.
