If it weren’t for the media and entertainment industry, there probably wouldn’t be as many misconceptions surrounding the practice of hypnosis. What many people don’t realize is that everyone reaches a hypnotic state at least twice throughout the day, and that’s when they wake up and when they go to sleep so everyone is capable of being hypnotized. The misconception that some people cannot be hypnotized arose from those who had unsuccessful experiences with a hypnotist that was probably not experienced or certified. With that being said, let’s take a look at some of the other common myths and misconceptions surrounding hypnosis.

5 Common Misconceptions Surrounding Hypnosis

  1. During hypnosis, you can be controlled to do things against your will.

This myth stems from the entertainment industry’s portrayal of hypnotism. During a session, you have complete control and are totally aware of what’s occurring. The hypnotist is simply a facilitator, and they can’t make you do anything against your will.

  2. Hypnosis is like a truth serum.

Just because you’re under hypnosis doesn’t mean you cannot lie. Believe it or not, you may be able to come up with more creative lies while under hypnosis because you’re tapping into your subconscious where there are many other resources at your disposal.

  3. It’s possible to get stuck in a trance.

It’s not possible to get permanently stuck in a hypnotic trance. This isn’t Inception. Hypnotic states are something we enter in and out of regularly, and even if a hypnotist cannot relieve you of your hypnotic state, your body will eventually wake yourself up and return to a fully alert state.

  4.  People under hypnosis are unconscious.

It’s not hard to understand why someone may think that while you’re hypnotized, you’re asleep, however that’s just another myth. People who are under a state of hypnosis are neither asleep nor unconscious because they can think, talk, and even move around if necessary, though they may not be aware of it, at the time.

  5.  You won’t remember what the hypnotist told you.

This is dependent on the patient because everyone’s hypnotic state is different. For some, they’re extremely focused on what their hypnotist is saying while for others, they may be listening, but they’re not paying conscious attention. It’s important to note though that neither affects the successfulness of the session.

Benefits from Hypnosis

Hypnosis is used for several different reasons, from behavioral therapy to weight loss; so much can be achieved while in a hypnotic state. Hypnosis is like giving your brain that little extra kick it needs to make some of the changes you’ve been thinking about for so long. If you think hypnosis can benefit you and your life, make sure you’re enlisting in a reliable hypnotist who specializes in what you’re trying to achieve.
