The American Psychiatry Association defines addiction as the consistent use of compulsive substances, despite knowing the associated risks.
We know that alcohol and hard drugs are addictive, but there are plenty of other substances that we consume daily that can get us hooked. They may not impact us right away, but they can do long-term damage to our health—bad carbohydrates are one of them.

A new study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that the consumption of carbs activated parts of the brain that flare up in people with addictions.
Other studies have also shown that foods like pie and cheesecake light up pleasure receptors in the brain, the same way drugs and alcohol do.

The Case For Carb Addiction

Some scientists have gone as far as saying that refined carbs like fructose (found in honey, fruits and veggies) are also addictive. They state that fructose works similarly to alcohol and causes inflammation in the liver, insulin resistance, and disrupts fat levels in the blood. It also increases the drive to eat to feel pleasure instead of satisfying hunger, aka hedonic hunger.

What Carbs Are Most Addictive?

It shouldn’t come as a surprise we’re drawn to high-carb foods when we’re stressed or in a bad mood. Unfortunately, these foods are more accessible to us than healthy ones.

Research conducted by the University of Michigan found that the following foods were most addictive in a typical American diet:

  • Cake
  • Cheese
  • Cheeseburger
  • Chips
  • Chocolate
  • Cookies
  • French fries
  • Ice cream
  • Pizza
  • Soda (not diet)

Do you find yourself craving these foods? You aren’t alone. The US’s poor diet habits lead to $50 billion in healthcare costs every year! High-carb foods are easily available, and they tend to be more affordable than healthy meals (when you’re ordering in).

If you think you’re addicted to carbs, it’s time to make a change.
