With the world looking to live healthier, bariatric surgery seems like an attractive weight loss prospect. Though studies claim that people will continue to seek out bariatric procedures to address morbid obesity, the question remains, is this really the best we’ve got?

What else is there?

Though there are a number of effective ways to lose weight and stay healthy, one form that has proven to be highly effective is bariatric hypnosis programs. Such programs supplement hypnotherapy with nutritional and lifestyle education.

Not only are such programs highly successful, they also lack the multitude of side effects suffered by people post bariatric surgery.

What Side Effects?

Like with most conventional medication and treatment, you will often find the internet inundated with blogs and articles singing praise about procedures with a miniscule one line disclaimer. The disclaimer will likely indicate the presence of ‘certain’ side effects but fail to elaborate on what these may be. This is for good reason as some of the side effects would really get people rethinking that gastric sleeve surgery or whatever surgical weight loss procedure they were opting for!

These Side Effects!

We proceeded to do a little serious research on what those little one-line disclaimers were hiding and the results were shocking. Here are some of the many side effects that you might suffer post bariatric surgery! We’ve divided them into long and short term just for clarity.

Short Term Side Effects

These often follow immediately after surgery and in most cases (not guaranteed) are meant to level out within a few weeks time. These include:

  • Acidic Reflux
  • Post surgical infection
  • Stomach obstruction (which could result in nausea, extreme pain or discomfort and gassiness)
  • The usual surgical risks (including fatal blood loss)
  • Loss of ability to eat certain foods
  • Chronic indigestion
  • Realizing the treatment was completely ineffective (no weight loss)

Long Term Side Effects

These side effects might be present initially but usually form a little later. Like the short-term side effects however, there is no guarantee that these can be stopped post surgery. These include:

  • Malnutrition
  • Bowel obstruction (which manifests again as extreme pain, chronic vomiting, gas and vertigo)
  • Dumping Syndrome (also results in vertigo and nausea)
  • Ulcers
  • Gastrointestinal tract hemorrhage (this one is quite unpleasant but feel free to copy and search so you know just how bad it is!)
  • Stomach Stenosis
  • Hernias
  • Low blood sugar

Is it worth it?

Sure many would agree. They might quote success rates and the fact that there are no other medical procedures available. Though all this may be true, there are other better less intrusive and harmless ways to lose weight such as a bariatric bypass hypnosis. This actually allows you to feel the (positive) effect of having a bariatric bypass without the actual physical intrusion.

Personally, it would make more sense to exhaust all other means and techniques of weight loss before opting for something so final and so risky!

Conclusion

There is no doubt about the risks of bariatric surgery however, we’re aware of how desperate and miserable one can become when trapped in the throes of poor health like obesity. That being said, don’t write yourself off just yet!

Therapist Rena Greenberg has done ground breaking work in the area of hypnotherapy for weight loss and bariatric hypnosis program development and execution. Her years of experience and hundreds of success stories stand as testimony to the effectiveness of her program!

Don’t give in to the operating table so quickly! There might be hope for you yet! Remember, change that lasts is not change you have done to you, it is change you make yourself!
