Why Sugar Can Be So Tempting

To explain it further, sugar contains glucose that is absorbed from our intestine into our bloodstream and then distributed to various parts of the body. As it provides energy to our brain cells, glucose is of utmost importance. Scientists believe that this survival function may be the reason we eat sugar with such fondness.

It Can Prove to be a Mood-Lifter

Sugar may be addictive because it releases, what many scientists call, ‘happy neurotransmitters’. Serotonin and beta-endorphins are two mood-enhancing neurotransmitters that our brains release when we eat sugar.

Talking about serotonin first, it is a neurotransmitter that is used in antidepressants to relieve symptoms of anxiety and depression. Sending positive messages to the body, this hormone has the power to lift one’s mood.

Another of the feel-good neurotransmitters, beta-endorphin can produce feelings of well-being, increase self-worth and relieve anxiety. It is the reason why a chocolate chip cookie may sound so addictive.
