Author discusses ways to rid cravings

Chocolate. Candy bars. Potato chips. Rolls. Pastries.

These are all items that often sabotage a diet and make it hard for people to lose weight.

Often, when knowing these “yummy” items are off limits during a diet we crave or want them more.

Hypno-therapist Rena Greenberg has published a new book to stop those cravings once and for all.

Between the power of hypnosis and the ability to change, a person can go from craving a cheeseburger and fries to wanting to eat broccoli and cauliflower.

“The biggest problem people face is cravings,” said Greenberg, who has worked with weight loss issues for more than 18 years.

She said our bodies crave these foods because they are in our system and often provide a pleasure factor.

If people associate chocolate with an improved attitude, of course they’re going to want more, Greenberg said.

“Eating food is a way to meet our deeper needs, but there’s no amount of food that can feed these very real needs,” she said.

If people can reach into themselves and figure out why they are eating so much or certain foods, they can help defeat the cravings.

Greenberg’s book, “The Craving Cure,” in bookstores this week, teaches how to move beyond the need for certain foods. It takes people step by step through the process.

If we gain some freedom and stop being obsessed with food, we’ll never have to diet again, and we can just throw them out the window.” she said.

In order to reach that step, changes have to be made on the inside first.

“We have to go from feeling out of control to feeling empowered and resourceful,” Greenberg said.

This technique focuses less on willpower and more on accessing a place where people decide they’d rather eat healthy food.

In the book, Greenberg offers a two-week high-nutrition cleanse to help detoxify the body of the sugars and carbs it craves.

The diet consists mostly of raw vegetable juicing, water and protein.

The cleanse gets rid of the harmful food and introduces the body to nutrient-dense foods.

The body really wants the nutritious foods and only craves the sugar because it is trying to get the nutrition it needs to survive and perform well.

Greenberg admits she used to be a carbohydrate addict and now, she often craves salads.

Most importantly, Greenberg said, people can’t be afraid to try.

And if the book isn’t enough of a jump-start, Greenberg hosts weight-loss seminars at various locations around the United States.

This month, she’ll be having seminars at Oakwood Hospital and Medical Center in Dearborn.

The seminars have helped many people change their lives for the better.

“It’s just so thrilling, it’s amazing to hear from people on how their lives have changed,” she said.

Veronica Douglas of Detroit is one woman who has experienced success with Greenberg’s program.

“I am very pleased with the results of Rena Greenberg’s hypnosis weight loss program. I’ve lost more than 70 pounds. I enjoy food now and look forward to each day whereas I only ate once or twice a day due to work or stress before.

Now I eat at least five times a day and I eat healthy food. I had injured my knee and back in the past and wasn’t able to do as much physically. I gained so much weight but after the seminar, I began eating right, thinking positive and exercising. Thanks and I would love to help others.”

Douglas was happy to change her lifestyle after growing up with food as the center of her life.

“I was always told to eat. Cooking makes my mom and grandma happy. I wanted to please them. I got tired of pleasing everyone else. After the hypnosis at the seminar, I started being active again. I stopped listening to everyone else and started listening to myself.”

Greenberg’s seminar will take place from 1-3pm June 16 at Oakwood Hospital & Medical Center, 18101 Oakwood Blvd. In Dearborn.
